Although English has become a primary tool to bridge the relationship between groups of people, it’s still only a secondary language for the majority of the world. The reason for such, has solely to do with cultural independence. English is globally used, but does not represent the global culture. English is only popular due to the post effect of colonization. If not for colonization it is unknown what language would be the majority, but whatever language it would not be the language of the people. This is the reason regional languages are still thriving. Regional language is a direct representation of the culture of a group of people. This language, such as Hindi, will flourish because it is attached to group of people’s identity. While English is only a learned language within schools, it is not something particularly taught or heard in the home. This is especially prevalent within poorer communities. In any country the wealthy people will always be the smallest percentage, so because the poorer population continues to grow so does the regional language. These are some reasons why a majority of regional languages will continue to grow.
If I could give any advice to a college student it would be to learn the language most closely related to your job area. For example, if the student plans to stay in the USA, I would tell him to learn Spanish as a second language. Spanish is the second most popular language in the USA and can be useful and almost any field. Although if the student wants to work outside of the USA, I would tell him to learn either Chinese or French. Either of these languages would work depending on what field the student wants to go in. If the student wants to do education or philanthropy, then I would suggest French, although if the student wants to do business then I would suggest Chinese. China is growing tremendously in the area of business, so it would only make sense for them to be proficient in that second language.
